If you ever ask anyone where and what they did on holiday, it would be very doubtful that you would be given the answer that they toured around a foreign country looking for derelict and abandoned sights? Mad as it sounds this is exactly what happened, the quirky interest of “Urban Exploration” led to the finding of this abandoned farmstead in Belgium. Codenamed Tapioca Farm, due to the previous occupants love of the stuff and stored in the kitchen cupboards. Not much is known about the small farmstead that is located North West of Brussels in a small village called Boterberg. It is a site that has been very popular of recent times and many visitors have walked through the property gazing in wonder and awe at the beauty found within the crumbling site which looks like it belongs on a film set for a new horror film. Many of the buildings features have been moved and probably more so than in the last 50 years, all for enhancing of that “one shot” which to the author looks flawless. The revisit a couple of months later was a better experience than the first. Yes, like everyone before, you see and create your image but never look. It is only when you return to a place that you really begin to understand and how it might have once been. Lighting is always different and when I arrived it was under cover of darkness. With several packs of tea lights I soon light the dining room and created a magical and atmospheric photo shoot. The table and chairs were placed like the last owners had just finished their meals and went about the daily business. Reminiscent of the thoughts of the Mary Celeste sailing ship found with nobody aboard. Perhaps again it was a set made by previous visitors and with a few alterations, transformed the room to become the jewel of the photography trip I spent the night inside the property to awake to a beautiful dawn with light streaming through the windows and start on a days photography of the place once again.
