Kep Sur Mer (Kep by the sea) is a small seaside town near Kampot in Cambodia.Known as the 'Cambodian Riviera', the town had its own casino and was visited by parties of diplomats and wealthy Cambodian society eager for a swim, a sail or a stroll on the beach. Rich Phnom Penhois built homes in confident modernist styles with expansive ocean views. Former King Sihanouk’s mansion was built on top of the hill in Kep, 1964. It was his own summer villa, overlooking the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Thailand, but it was never being occupied. Today the abandoned homes give the whole town an eerie feeling of having been just recently deserted.A few of the buildings are now homes to 'security guards', families paid by homeowners to keep squatters out. The fate of the Royal household was like the fate of Kep's other luxury properties - mixed unique lifestyle!
