Mrs Shields and other members of her family handed in a petition, signed by more than 30, 000 people, calling for British Prime Minister Tony Blair and the Government to lobby the Bulgarian authorities and make every possible effort to secure Michael's release from prison in the country. The 19-year-old was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after he was found guilty of the attempted murder of a Bulgarian man in Varna in May after watching his team win the European Cup in neighbouring Turkey.
