Framwellgate Bridge with the Castle and Cathedral in the background, November, LUMIERE, the UK's largest light festival, returned to the beautiful medieval city of Durham. For four nights only, around 80 local and international artists, lighting designers and community groups brought a sprinkle of winter magic to the city with a breathtaking series of installations and projections that illuminated Durham's buildings, streets and bridges. Early estimates indicate that 140, 00 people took to the streets of Durham to enjoy the 35 artworks that ranged from large-scale projections like Crown of Light which saw the Lindesfarne Gospels projected onto Durham Cathedral, to neons, to installations like I Love Durham, the giant snowdome that transformed the Market Place into a playground. LUMIERE 2011 also included Lux Scientia, a collaboration with light festivals in Poland and Estonia, as well as four pieces created by artists from the North East, Brilliant. LUMIERE is brought to you by Artichoke - best known for creating unforgettable events like La Machine in Liverpool or Antony Gormley's One & Other. We returned to Durham at the invitation of Durham County Council, who were delighted that the first LUMIERE festival in 2009 brought 75, 000 people to the city and dazzled visitors and residents alike
