North West Evening Mail Open as usual’ is Vince’s message Published at 12:57, Monday, 30 November 2009 A HIGH profile politician said the message from flood-hit Lake District should be – it’s business as usual. Liberal Democrat shadow chancellor and deputy leader Vince Cable visited several flooded areas on Saturday. Mr Cable – together with Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron – also spoke to local businesses in Bowness. He said: “People are not coming to Cumbria because they have a picture of bridges falling down. We need to dispel this image and get the message across that the Lakes is open for business.” Mr Cable, who also visited householders in Kendal, acknowledged that the government was doing what it could to ease the plight of victims. But he said organizations such as local authorities, environment and highways agencies and utility companies could better co-ordinate their response in at-risk areas to try to prevent flooding. Mr Cable said that without the flood defense work undertaken in South Lakeland over recent years the devastation would have been much worse. He said: “There is no doubt the climate is changing and more should be spent on improving flood defenses
