Stroud Wassail in Gloucestershire is an annual winter community festival in a Cotswold country town. Wassailing in Stroud was practised from Anglo Saxon times until the 1960's and this winter street festival is part a strong revival of old English customs and traditions.Wassailing hopes to banish demons and wish neighbours and friends good health and prosperity for the year to come. The street performances include singing from Wassailers, Morris Dancing, Mummers plays and various mythical beasts parading the streets. Morris dancers from the surrounding areas take part including troupes from Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. They provide a variety of entertainment based on medieval traditions and merry making. The costumes include 'tatter coats' and traditional black face paint. The latter relates to when agricultural workers disguised themselves to earn money begging when out of work in winter months. Morris dancing can be traced back to the 1400's. For many of the participants it is about keeping traditions alive as well as dancing for the enjoyment.
