THAIPUSAM FESTIVAL - Batu Caves - Kuala Lumpur - February 2012 During this three day festival well over a million devotees attend to pay homage to Murugan, the Tamil god of war. The festival is celebrated on the full moon in the Tamil month of Thai (January/February). Devotees prepare for the celebration by praying and fasting for several weeks before Thaipusam. During the festival, many devotees shave their heads and undertake a pilgrimage along a predetermined route while engaging in acts of devotion, and carrying various types of kavadi (burdens). This could involve carrying a physical burden or by submitting themselves to body piercings such as skewers through the cheeks or fish-hooks in their backs. The procession is an ongoing stream of devotees throughout the day and night. Drum troupes and dancers accompanying entranced spirit mediums create the atmosphere, for this colourful and impressive mass gathering of religious worship.
