Iglesias, Sardinia - April 18, 2014: Iglesias Easter; Holy Week in Iglesias. It is celebrated every year, between the end of March and April. Period celebrated from Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday before Easter. In procession: "Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament." Characterised by an unmistakable Iberian influence deriving from centuries of Spanish rule over the island. From Palm Sunday Iglesias is shrouded in a very special atmosphere. The streets of the old town come alive with ancient traditions and there is great anticipation for the religious ceremonies and processions. The most spiritual of these take place on Good Friday. Indeed, on Good Friday morning the ‘Germani’ walk in procession up to the Sa Costera quarter, re-enacting the ascent towards the Calvary. Here, in the evening a private service takes place to celebrate the S’Iscravamentu (the Deposition). After which there is a procession known as the Descent or the funeral procession which carries the simulacrum back down into the town.
