Just before noon on the day of Iraq’s first democratic elections after the reign of Saddam Hussein. This is the view from the balcony of a house outside a polling station in the Karada district of Baghdad. A satellite uplink truck belonging to Iraqi television is parked on the right with lots of people around, including members of the press, Iraqi policemen and Iraqi National Guard soldiers. The polling station itself is a school which is in the background directly in front of a colourful mosque. In the foreground is the second of four barriers that people have to pass through before they are allowed to vote, the third and fourth barriers can be seen beyond. A curfew aimed at private vehicles was in force to thwart suicide car bombers. After the US-led invasion in March 2003, the Americans went on to occupy Iraq for eight years as part of a multi-national force, their troops finally departing in 2011.
