Gin Lane. Engraving by H. Adlard after a painting by William Hogarth. From "The Works of William Hogarth" (London: Jones & Co. 1833). The scene is the St. Giles area of London in the mid 18th-century. Gin was the tipple of choice amongst the London poor: "Drunk for penny, dead-drunk for tuppence, clean straw for nothing" as the saying went. A newspaper of the period reported that "Time was when gin was only to be found in blind alley-ways, in dirty obscure dram-shops; but now gin is become a giant demi-god, a mighty spirit, dwelling in gaudy temples, erected to his honour in every street, and worshipped by countless thousands who daily sacrifice at his shrine their health, strength, money, minds, bodies, wives, children, sacred home and liberty. In these temples of the great spirit, Gin may be seen unwashed multitudes; old men and maidens, fathers and mothers, husbands, wives and children; crowding, jostling and sucking in the spirit which the flaunting priestesses dole out to them in return for their copper offerings." (From the notes to the engraving). Digitally enhanced by Select Images. (The companion picture, "Beer Street", can be found under Alamy reference ADR4AN).
