Leopards are, in proportion to size, the strongest of the big cats. They are agile tree climbers, often resting on tree branches during the heat of the day. They also have the ability to lift heavy prey into tree branches to ensure other predators and scavengers, such as lions and hyenas, are unable to steal it from them. They do not roar as is the case with lion. Leopard vocalization is a staccato rasping cough. Leopards are renowned for being elusive and shy, making sightings in the wild scarce and brief. Leopards eat anything available, varying from small gazelle, to monkeys, rodents and birds. They are predominantly solitary animals with male territories are larger than females with overlapping occurring. Leopards are mainly nocturnal animals, resting in thick brush or in trees during the day. They are solitary, preferring to live alone except for mating purposes, after which they part company again. They have two or three cubs per gestation. Cubs are helpless at birth, resulting in a high mortality rate, and need to be cared for until 18 months old.
