Helmsdale is a village on the east coast of the county of Sutherland, in the Highlands of Scotland and the Highland council area. There is the site of what was an an impressive medieval castle, and the name of the village can be traced to Norse origins, but the modern village was planned in 1814 to resettle communities that had been removed from the surrounding straths as part of the Highland Clearances. It is a fishing port at the estuary of the River Helmsdale, and was once the home of one of the largest herring fleets in Europe. The river itself is well known for its fishing. The village is on the A9 road, at a junction with the A897, and has a railway station on the Far North Line. Facilities include an independent youth hostel, a heritage centre, an art gallery, and an inn. Helmsdale’s history goes back to before the construction of Helmsdale Castle built in 1488, but its story actually dates back at least as far as the Vikings, who settled the sheltered mouth of the River Ullie or River Helmsdale as it is now more usually known. The harbour was built in the years from 1818, and extended in 1823 and again in 1892. As you look around Helmsdale's harbour today, try to imagine it as home port for the 200 or more herring boats that once operated from here! BCY 0651
