The Crystal Palace Subway was built in 1865 by a team of Italian Cathedral craftsmen in a strong Byzantine style. It was designed to give first class rail passengers arriving for Crystal Palace a suitable exotic passageway to match the splendor of the station and the Palace. People would emerge from the subway right in front of the huge glass Crystal Palace. However when the Palace was destroyed by fire in 1936, its use came to an abrupt end. It was used as an air raid shelter during the war, but apart from that was left alone , even when they demolished the station and railway in 1961. Now The Friends of Crystal Palace Subway initiative are working with Bromley and Southwark councils to repair and maintain it, so that it can be admired once again by the public
