The cornerstone for a new East-Jerusalem Jewish neighborhood was ceremoniously set today at the Bet-Orot Yeshiva on the Mount of Olives Ridge. Jerusalem, Israel. 31/01/2011. A ceremony was conducted today marking the setting of a cornerstone for the new Bet-Orot Jewish neighborhood on the Mount of Olives Ridge. The neighborhood will include 18 apartments in four three-story buildings. The residential units will serve the general public as well as the families of married Bet-Orot Yeshiva students. Present were Rabbi Dani Issac, head of Bet-Orot Yeshiva. Rabbi Prof. Daniel Hershkowitz, Minister of Science and Technology, David Hadari, Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Rabbi Chanan Porat, former Governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, current host of Fox News Channel talk show Huckabee and actor Jon Voight. The Bet-Orot Yeshiva and neighborhood are the nucleus of new Jewish settlement on the Mount of Olives Ridge, creating continuity of Jewish settlement in the north-eastern part of Jerusalem including the French Hill, the Mount Scopus Hebrew University and the Bet-Orot Yeshiva campus. According to supporters it expresses the strengthening of Jewish presence in a united Jerusalem and the fact that Jerusalem is the home of every Jew in Israel and throughout the world. Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, David Hadari, said a new Jewish neighborhood is a small step forwards towards being able to make sacrifices before God at a rebuilt Holy Temple. Construction has already begun on land privately purchased by American businessman Erwin Moskowitz who purchased the land with the purpose of "Judaizing" the eastern part of the capital. Building on private property, construction is not subject to the government's consideration. In early 2010, the Jerusalem Municipal Planning and Construction Committee authorized the construction of 24 housing units at the site.
