August 16 2017: In the wake of violence in Charlottsville VA, the Dallas City Counsel has put forth a resolution to call a vote on removal of memorials to the Confederacy on public property. A citizen task force has been called and a vote by the counsel is set to occur by September 13th. - The Confederate War Memorial in Dallas was dedicated on June 25, 1896 by the United Daughters of the Confederacy and commemorates the soldiers and leaders of the Confederate States during the American Civil War. The Granite and Marble memorial features five statues, President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E Lee, General "Stonewall" Jackson, and General Albert Johnson around the base and an anonymous Confederate Soldier atop a center pillar. The base of the pillar includes several pro-Confederate inscriptions and pays homage to the southern cavalry, infantry and navy. Currently the CSA memorial resides in the Pioneer Park Cemetery, next to the Dallas Convention Center, where it was relocated in 1961 from the Old City Park.
