The sun sets over Cerro Quemado mountain in Wirikuta, Real de Catorce, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, July 24, 2014. The wixarica huichol Indians myths tells that the sun emerged from this mountain burning it at the time of the creation of the world. Wirikuta is a sacred sanctuary for the Wirrarika Huichol Indians and is threatened by First Majestic Silver, a Canadian silver mining company that operates in Mexico, which obtained permission from the Mexican government for its proposed La Luz Silver Project for the extraction of silver in the Sierra Decatorce. Although Wirikuta is protected at national and international levels the Mexican authorities gave the permission to mining in this sacred place. The mining site represents a threat to the environment balance and health of the population in the area.
