Fencing will go up around part of Piccadilly Gardens from today as a substantial programme of repair begins to bring the water feature back on line. Problems with fountain’s main pump mechanism, located underneath Piccadilly Gardens, have meant the fountain has been out of action for some months. The plant room will be completely replaced, which requires massive earth removal works to allow a crane to lift out and replace the broke machinery. As the final stage of the works, the whole of Piccadilly Gardens will also be re-turfed. This major programme of work will take several months to complete and the Gardens will reopen to the public in the New Year. Cllr Pat Karney, Manchester City Council’s city centre spokesperson, said: “We have shared everyone’s frustration at our dry fountain, but it will flow again. It’s one of the things that make the city centre exciting for young people and I can’t wait to see it going again. “This is a huge piece of work, there’s a labyrinth of rooms hidden beneath Piccadilly Gardens that needs to be completely dug out, removed and replaced. It will mean the area will be fenced off during the winter months, but will be completed early next year – in good time for spring.”
