The son of a POW who made it through the Japanese camps George Straughan lays a wreath on behalf of the Families, George Straughan Snr, was a Fusilier in Z Coy, 9th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusilers, having been evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940 the Battalion left the UK in 1941 for the Far East arriving only 10 days before the fall of Singapore. 15th February 2011, the 70th Anniversary of the Fall of Singapore commerated in the small town of Berwick upon Tweed in the North East of England attended by two ex Prisoners of War who were prisoners of the Japanese for over three and a half years, they were Henry McCreath a Captain at the time with Z Company of the 9th Battalion Royal Northumberland Fusiliers and Eric Lomax who was a Lieutenant in the Royal Signals. Eric is to be played by Colin Firth in the film adapted from his book.
