Italy Apulia Gargano National Park Tremiti Island San Nicola Island Church Santa Maria Al mare mosaic of the Floor San Nicola is the historical, religious and administrative center of the archipelago. For the numerous traces of an ancient and glorious past, it is considered an open air museum.Founded in 1045 by Benedictine monks headed by Abbot Alberic, the massive complex of the church and abbey of St. Maria a Mare dominates the most inaccessible islands of the archipelago of Tremiti. Center of great power in the Middle Ages, the abbey passed by the Benedictines and the Cistercians, in the Renaissance, to the Canons Regular of the Lateran, which also built the beautiful Renaissance cloister. In the eighteenth century the abbey was suppressed and the island became a penal colony, with the transformation of the religious complex in jail. The church of S. Maria a Mare is currently the Renaissance facade that replaced the old Romanesque structure, better detectable inside, where it is preserved, in part, the ancient mosaic floor dating from the late eleventh century, the richly decorated with alternating motifs decorated with zoomorphic and geometric plant. In the chancel near the altar pairs of deer and elephants are fighting on a bottom face with vegetal motifs within panels decorated with circles and pelte at the center, the remains of two rotae. In the classroom, panel with geometric and vegetal with a big snout in a circle, surrounded by smaller circles with other animals. Laterally, a round with an eagle with spread wings, the figure of a lion is visible below the presbytery, which is elevated above the nave. The subjects are typical of medieval bestiaries and symbolize the figure and the virtues of Jesus Christ.
