Jugurtha was the king of Numidia (part of present-day Algeria and Tunisia) from 118-109 B.C. He, with his brother, had assumed control of the kingdom upon his father's death. However, the two brothers argued and the Romans, who governed much in North Africa following their defeat of the Carthaginians, were called in to settle affairs. Through bribery, Jugurtha gained the larger share of the territory to command, but still not content, he had his brother assassinated. During this turmoil, Jugurtha invaded the town of Cirta and some Roman merchants were killed. Rome then declared war on Jugurtha. Continuing to use bribery and other methods, he managed to have Jugurtha come to him (as seen in this illustration, showing Jugurtha in the tent where he had come unarmed). Bocchus then turned Jugurtha over to the Romans. The Romans publicly executed him in Rome in 104 B.C.
