The foot ferry at King's Lynn struggles increasingly with changes in the riverbed to the extent that silting is making it difficult at low tide on a spring tide to reach the jetties on each side of the river though more so on the eastern side seen here than on the west side. It became necessary to use walking boards to get passengers to the ferry craft and more recently to use inflatable dinghies. The ferry operators say that three years of low rainfall, particularly in the autumn when the river has historically been flushed through, has led to a build-up of sediment. They think it is evidence of climate change.
