Caricature about Ashio Copper Mine pollution. Shozo Tanaka is appealing about this problem at National Diet in 1892. Published on Marumaru Chimbun, June 4, 1892. ( No. 860 ) Artist Kiyochika Kobayashi ( 1847 - 1915) Since late 19th century, Copper Mine pollution had occurred along Watarase River around Tochigi prefecture and Gunma prefecture. It was first Japanese public nuisance in Japan. It was caused by waste of Ashio Copper Mine by Furukawa mining industry. Shozo Tanaka (December 15, 1841 – September 4, 1913) a Japanese politician and social activist appealed to solve this problem in National Diet, but did not succeed. This caricature is that scene. In 1901, after resigning of National Diet, he tried appeal to Emperor Meiji directly. It did not succeed. but his action had became famous. After this incident, he act against construction of reservoir to prevent villager's life for example Yanaka village. He is considered to Japanese first conservationist.
