Altre informazioni:
The Powell River mill was the first newsprint mill in Western Canada and once the largest pulp and paper mill in the world. It began production in 1912 and operated under several companies before being taken over by Norske Skog in 2001 and Catalyst Paper in 2005, making specialty papers on three paper machines. In December 2021 Catalyst announced the mill would be shut down indefinitely, effective immediately, as it was no longer viable. The original Townsite (now a part of the larger city of Powell River) was professionally planned in 1910 and built beginning in 1912, and became one of Canada's very few National Historic Districts in 1995. The mill and village were built on the site of tiskwat, an important village of the Tla'amin (formerly Sliammon) First Nation, who were displaced and relocated to a site north of there.
