The Australian Magpie (Gymnorhina tibicen) is a medium-sized black and white bird related to the Currawong and butcherbird. Native to Australia and southern New Guinea, Their black and white marking vary between the now recognized 9 subspecies. The Australian Magpie is a courageous and assertive bird ranging from 37–43 cm in length. They will swoop and attack at times as a show of territory or to protect nesting areas, yet are often quite passive even given to domestication. The male and female are similar in appearance, yet the males may be slightly taller and have darker black markings. The Australian Magpie, being omnivorous, feeds mainly on invertebrates. They are common throughout Australia and New Guinea. They are considered introduced in New Zealand and the Solomon Islands.
