The Matchless Mine is one of the most famous in Colorado. It was bought in 1879 by HAW Talbot for $117 000. A year later it was earning him over $1000 a day. He used his money to build the Grand Hotel and the Opera House in Leadville. He scandalised society at the time by marrying Elizabeth "Baby Doe" McCourt in 1882. Together they lived a lavish life style, squandering much of his fortune. Tabor died in April 1889, his fortune gone. Baby Doe lived on in a cabin near to the old mine until 1935. During that winter she was found frozen to death in the cabin, living in absolute poverty. The Mineral Belt Trail is an 11.6 mile trail that loops around the city of Leadville in the Colorado Rockies. It was opened in July 2000. The trail is hikers, cyclists, blade skaters and other non-motorised transport. In winter it has groomed Nordic ski trails. Six miles of the trail passes through Leadville’s old mining district. All along the route there are points of interest with information panels. Being in the Rockies all of the trail is over 3000 metres in elevation.
