The Mosque of Uqba (Arabic: جامع عقبة), also known as the Great Mosque of Kairouan (Arabic: جامع القيروان الأكبر), is one of the most important mosques in Tunisia. Built by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi from 670 A.D. (the year 50 according to the Islamic calendar) at the founding of the city of Kairouan, the mosque is spread over a surface area of 9, 000 square metres and is considered as the oldest place of worship in the western Islamic world, as well as a model for all later mosques in the Maghreb [1]. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is certainly one of the most impressive and largest islamic monuments in North Africa [2], its perimeter is almost equal to 415 metres (1, 361 feet). This space contains a hypostyle prayer hall, a huge marble-paved courtyard and a massive minaret. In addition to its spiritual prestige [3], the Mosque of Uqba is universally reputed as a masterpiece of both architecture and Islamic art
