Cw 5001 Closed Lock 15 Marple 5.10.17 On the 11.9.17 the Canal and River Trust issued a stoppage notice in relation to Lock 15 on the Marple flight of locks on the Peak Forest Canal to the east of Manchester. The towpath side wall f the lock has moved inwards and the lock has become unusable as it has become too narrow to allow the safe passage of boats through the lock. Initially the Trust had hoped to reopen the lock within a couple of weeks after repairing the holes that had appeared in the towpath on the lock side and allowing passage of boats that are no wider than 6ft 10inch beam. However following further investigations by the CRT engineers it has been decide that it is unsafe to allow the lock to be used, so the stoppage will remain in force until a repair is affected. The CRT has said that the repairs will be a significant and complex project and they cannot predicate a date when the flight will be reopened. This lock flight is part of the popular Cheshire ring cruising route, which is now closed the only really good news, is that this has happened towards the end of the summer cruising season. Here on a picture taken on the 5.10.17 it is possible to see how much the lock side wall has bowed inwards.
