Manor Class steam locomotive No. 7827, "Lydham Manor", was built in Swindon in December 1950 by British Railways to a Great Western Railways design. The engine was withdrawn in October 1965 and sold for scrap. The engine was restored in 1973 and is now based at the Dartmouth Steam Railway in Devon. The Dartmouth and Torbay Railway opened in stages between 1859 and 1864 and ran from Torquay (now Torre) via Paignton, Goodrington (opened in 1928) and Churston (originally Brixham Road) to Kingswear, for a ferry to Dartmouth. A branch line was added to the important fishing town of Brixham, from Churston, in 1868. The line became part of the Great Western Railway in 1876 and later the Western Region of British Railways in 1948. The line was rationalised in the 1960s, which included a general reduction of services, the removal of Sunday services and the closure of the Brixham Branch (in 1963). The whole line south of Paignton was originally cited for closure in the late 1960s but was instead sold for heritage operation in 1972; it is now operated as the Dartmouth Steam Railway.
