The Porta Maggiore (ancient Porta Praenestina) in Rome supports the channels of two aqueducts (Aqua Claudia and Anio Novus). Both were begun by Caligula in A.D. 38 and finished by Claudius as the topmost inscription records in A.D. 52. The lengths given in the text (45 and 62 Roman miles)are the actual lengths of the channels and not the distance from of the sources from the city. The inscription below this records a restoration in A.D.71 by Vespasian, while a third inscription speaks of a second restoration by Titus in A.D. 81. It was later repaired by Severus and Caracalla about A.D, . 200. The gateway is double, with arches that are much more ornate than those in the rest of the aqueduct. Two roads (Via Labicana and Via Praenestina) passed through it.
