The Hardy Tree is a collection of old headstones that were placed around a tree in St Pancras Old Church graveyard at the time of the building of the London to Midland Railway embankment in the south east corner of the graveyard. The name derives from the fact that Thomas Hardy, the Victorian author of such books as Far From The Madding Crowd, Tess Of The Durbervilles, The Mayor Of Casterbridge and Jude The Obscure worked as an architect on the embankment. The embankment required the removal of many headstones and these were clustered around the tree, probably for safekeeping. They were never moved and as the tree has grown they have become entwined in the roots. In the background can be seen St Pancras Old Church.
