According to Egyptian mythology, Set (also spelled Seth) was the god of evil. In very early times, he had been honored as a kindly deity, but later myths told of him killing his brother Osiris, the deity honored as the god of the dead and rebirth and fertility. Set was, in turn, defeated by Osiris' son Horus. Some myths said that to resolve the feud between Horus and Set, Set was given Upper Egypt and Horus, Lower Egypt. At the end the First Dynasty, the two were united as a dual god, thus reflecting the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. This illustration—dating to 1904—reproduces an ancient Egyptian. The falcon head represents Horus; the other head is the Set animal, an unknown and mysterious figure that myth said had square-topped ears.
