The headstone of Albert Nash, blacksmith in the village of Imber on Salisbury Plain. The village was evacuated by the War Department in 1943. Residents were given 47 days to pack up and move out so that the army could use it for training in close combat, urban situations ahead of the D Day landings. Mr Nash died approximately 4 weeks after leaving the village and his death certificate recorded death due to a broken heart. He was the first villager to be returned to the village, albeit for burial. The village has remained in the hands of the Military ever since the evacuation in 1943 and is only opened to the public a few days a year.
