On May 30, 1900, the Chinese authorities in Peking (present-day Beijing) called for troops to protect the foreign legations against the Boxers, a rebellion that broke out in China in 1899 and ended in 1900. The revolt against fhe increasing foreign presence in China was crushed by a force consisting of British, French, Italian, German, Austrian, Russian, American, and Japanese troops. Among the 436 sailors and marines who went to fortify the legations were 56 Americans from the USS Oregon and the USS Newark. This engraving which dates to around 1901 shows workers erecting defenses at the American legation.
