Matyas Church in Budapest, Hungary, Europe
Altre informazioni:
Matyas Church in Budapest is the coronation church of the Hungarian kings. It has an impressive Gothic spire towering above much of Upper Buda. The church contains a number of architectural styles due to its troubled history. After the original church was destroyed in 1241, a new church was built from 1255 to 1269. Much of this Gothic building remains, though it was Matyas Corvinus, after whom the church is named, who expanded it in the 15th century. The final phase of restoration took place from 1873 to 1896, when Frigyes Schulek redesigned it in the Neo-Baroque style. The splendid multi-colored tiled roof was added between 1950 and 1970. The original plain roof burnt down after Soviet shelling during the siege of Buda in 1944-1945.
