This 1914 illustration complements a Native American myth that tells of a chief whose second son joined hunters on a buffalo hunt. When the son pursued one buffalo and followed it on his horse into a large pit, he could not be found by the rest of the hunters. The chief offered prizes to whoever would jump into the pit but no one accepted until the chief offered his daughter in marriage. The man jumped in, found the son but, in the excitement to pull him up, left the rescuer in the pit .He wandered about and met a wise man from whom he secured a white stallion and emerged back into his own country (pictured here). The chief gave him his daughter in marriage and made him his successor. The chief's other son was jealous and plotted against him. The brave warrior found out and on the next buffalo hunt jumped into the pit and returned to the Underworld.
