THE 2013 OLNEY PANCAKE RACE, THE OLDEST RACE IN THE WORLD.More than 2000 people packed the streets to see 24 townswomen compete in the oldest pancake race in the world today (Tues). The apron-clad women ran with skillet and pancake in hand to the finish line in the 568-YEAR-OLD race in the small market town of Olney, Bucks."It's in our blood in this country to look after traditions and it's lovely to have these occasions, " said Ian Ford, a member of the race committee"I think pancakes are one of those things we all remember and love from our childhood so people are keen to come along and watch."The historic Shrove Tuesday race, which started in 1445, is open to women over 18 who have lived in the picturesque town for more than six months. It is believed to have started after a townswoman was late for the Shriving service at the Olney Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. The Shriving service was a chance for people to confess their sins before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. The story suggests one woman heard the church bells ring for the service and was so worried about being late she fled her house and ran down the High Street still clutching her frying pan and wearing an apron.
