A Demonstration to demand the end of nuclear power in France, and its solidarity with the Japanese people, organized by the N.G.O., "Sortie du Nucleaire", was held at the National Assemble building on Sunday. It attracted about 300 people, from almost 60 organizations including several Labor unions and political parties. Other demonstrations were also held at the same time throughout the World, to also commemorate the Nuclear Crisis in Fukushima, Japan. They demand the immediate closing of the Fessenheim Power Plant, on the Rhine River in Alsace, the oldest in France, dangerously built near a fault line , and according to them, susceptible also to earthquakes. Also they want a national referendum and debate on the the future of Nuclear Power in France, with the goal to eliminate it as a power source in the future. A bigger demonstration was also held near the Fessenheim plant in collaboration with other German anti-Nuclear group, and drew about 10, 000 participants. "Nuclear is the energy of the past", said Nadine Schneider, spokesperson for "Sortie du Nucleaire". Demonstrators held signs saying "Nuclear, No Thanks", or "With Nuclear you have a radiant future." "We demand the promise of France to get out of Nuclear Energy, permanently", added the spokesperson. Among the participants, were seen the representatives of the Green Party- "Europe-Ecologie-Les Verts", including Denis Beaupin, Yves Cochet or Yannick Jadot, also Olivier Besancenot (NPA) and the President of Cap21, Corinne Lepage.
