The 1st Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill was born in 1650 and became one of England’s greatest soldiers and statesmen. He first served the Catholic King James and helped to suppress the Monmouth Rebellion. He then allied himself to the Protestant William of Orange who rewarded Churchill with an earldom when he came to the throne. He was suspected of treason and imprisoned in the Tower of London but released in Queen Anne’s reign and gained a dukedom for his leadership of the Allied forces in the Spanish Wars. His great victories at Blenheim, Ramillies, Oudenarde and Malplaquet brought him great fame.
