For the worship of Lord Ayyappa (a hindu god/deity) Men, women children go on pilgrimages for long periods in which they visit various important religious sacred sites and they all dress in black. A strong part of their culture, they have the choice whether to go or not. Bus loads of these followers, stop for a few hours and sometimes days at each site.They have a ceremony or puja before they leave where they are gifted with food, flowers and money by other family members. Certain rituals are followed over the period that they travel. In the puja, statues of deities are washed, incense burnt, prayers and chants are performed, blessings offered, for a safe abundant journey.
