Rajendra Pachauro, chair of the IPCC (intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), speaks during the press conference presenting the third working group report "Climate Change 2007, Mitigation of Climate Change", which focuses on the options for action to stabilize and reduce green house gas emissions, at a press conference in Bangkok, Thailand, on the 4th of May, 2007. The report, which was released after a week long closed door conference, will contribute to the IPCC fourth assessment report which will be published later this year. It will present the an up to date picture of the global present state of knowledge of climate change, a result of 6 years work, by 2500 scientific experts, and hundreds of lead and contributing authors with from 130 countries. Many developing countries including Thailand are confronted with a challenge to meet their populations rising demands for a more affluent lifestyle while keeping their growth sustainable. Thailand is using an increasing amount of energy (Bangkok consumed 2% more energy this March than last year), more people are owning private cars, using air conditioning and enjoying the luxuries more developed nations take for granted. Even though Thailand is in the process of industrialisation and urbanisation, half of the population relies on a predictable climate to prosper. Recent years have seen an increase in climate related disasters such as drought, flooding and storm surges. As this conference is taking place, Thailand is in the middle of the hot season but experiencing unseasonal rain causing local flooding to Bangkok and other areas of the country.
