The Avocet is a distinctively-patterned black and white wader with a long up-curved beak. It is the emblem of the RSPB and as such symbolises the bird protection movement in the UK. When intruders come near the avocet's nest, the parents circle overhead with cries of distress, and also may feign injury, bumping along the ground for short distances in order to draw attention away from the nest site. Listed on Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to take, injure or kill an Avocet or take, damage or destroy its nest, eggs or young. It is also an offence to intentionally or recklessly disturb the birds at or close to their nest during the breeding season. The Avocet, however, often chooses a nest site on or near the shingle footpaths that line the coast in Norfolk. This image shows an avocet fluttering it's wings and hopping as if injured.
