A Mullah is a Muslim man educated in Islamic theology and sacred law. The title, given to some Islamic clergy originates from the Arabic word Mawla describing both vicar and guardian. In many parts of the Muslim world it is a generic term used for local clerics and leaders of mosques, but is most often associated with the Shi’ite clerics of Iran. Before the early twentieth century the term mullah was used in Iranian hawzas or seminaries to refer to low level clergy, more concerned with telling stories of Ashura than religious teaching. The word is now sometimes used in the derogatory sense for any Islamic cleric. Iranians may at times refer to ayatollahs or other high level clerics as Mullahs to ridicule their authority. As a result the term ruhani, meaning spiritual is being promoted as an alternative.
