The Market place Kingston on Thames is part of the Royal Borough. It is the ancient borough where Saxon Kings were crowned. It is still the same today as it was in 838 when King Egbert of Wessex and Coeinoth, the borders between Wessex and Mercia when King Athelston united them both to become the Kingdom of England in the tenth century. Probably because of the towns symbolic situation many heads were crowned there, Aethalstan in 925, Eadred in 946, and Aethelread in 979. Others may have been crowned there, including Edward the elder in 902, Edmund in 939, Eadwig in 956, Edgar in about 960, and Edward the martyr in 975. It was thought that coronations took place in the Chapel of St.Mary, but that was destroyed in 1730. A large stone recovered from the ruins has been regarded as the Coronation Stone since the 18th century and is used in every Coronation since then.
