Kowloon was ceded to the British in 1860, when sampans were the main transport across Victoria Harbour. In !888 4 coal-fired ferry boats were introduced by the Kowloon Ferry Company, which changed its name to the Star Ferry Company in 1898. Nowadays, 12 diesel-powered ferries, each named after a particular star, transport 70, 000 passengers a day (26 million a year), the weekday, single fare, on the main route from Hong Kong Central to Tsim Sha Tsui, being HK$ 2, best paid with with an Octopus electronic smart card. Despite the development of the Mass Transit Railway (MTR) and road tunnels under Victoria Harbour, the Star Ferries remain popular with both local people and tourists. Hong Kong Cruise Ships anchor at the Ocean Termional, north of the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Terminal. Cruise ships leave daily for the international waters around Hong Kong. The 118 storey International Commerce Centre. completed in 2010, dwarfs the International Finance Tower 2 across the water on Hong Kong Island. Tall buildings in Kowloon used to be restricted by the proximity to Kai Tak Airport, replaced in 1998 by the new Chep Lap Kok Airport on Lantau Island.
