This holy Cathedral was originally an Anglican Church dedicated to St Barnabas. The building was constructed in the style of a three-aisled basilica without a dome. Since becoming Greek Orthodox, the building has undergone a process of renovation and refurbishment in a harmonious way to reflect the Greek Orthodox Church, so that the Christian faithful who enter it feel that they are in a Greek Orthodox place of worship. All internal walls and ceilings have been decorated with great devotion by a master iconographer from Athens, with biblical scenes and representations of prophets, saints and martyrs in the traditional Byzantine style. The above works began under the guidance and supervision of the then Archimandrite Chrysostomos Mavroyannopoulos, who served as Archimandrite from April 1961 to 1970 and who was born on the Greek Island of Naxos. In 1970 the Oecumenical Patriarchate promoted the Archimandrite to the office of Bishop of Kyanea and the Bishop continues to this day to supervise the overall running of the Cathedral. This holy Cathedral is an ecclesiastical institution and registered charity known as St Andrews Greek Orthodox Cathedral Trust governed by a board of seven Christian Orthodox trustees. The Cathedral is currently served by five distinguished clergy. In addition, there is a further charitable organisation, the St Andrews Greek Ladies Voluntary Organisation, which was founded in 1966 under the presidency of Mrs Katie N. Papathomas, who relentlessly continues the work of the organisation to the present day. http://www.standrewsgreekorthodoxcathedral.co.uk/
