Breaking a longtime taboo about mental breakdown in high-performance sport, Deisler's club revealed in November that the player, 23, was in the psychiatry ward of a Munich clinic with burn-out syndrome, a form of depression. After treatment, Deisler has been going out and about for several hours at a time, but is still spending most of his time in the hospital. He and his wife, who are expecting their first child shortly, are also preparing to move house from the suburbs to a downtown flat. In an interview with the German tabloid Bildzeitung on 22 December 2003 the Bayern coach said he was optimistic that Deisler returns to the team after the winter break.
