Smartwater is a commercially available colourless liquid which is used to mark valuable goods. It is difficult to remove and almost invisible to the naked eye but is revealed under ultra-violet light. Each batch of Smartwater is chemically encoded with a unique identifer as part of its chemical structure. The unique identifier is register to the legitimate owner and enables stolen goods to be identified. The railway industry, with thousands of miles of installed cable, often in hard to supervise places, are among many industries prone to loss of valuable cable to thieves intending to sell the metal to the scrap metal industry.
