Decommissioned in 1988 but still used as a radio navigation beacon until 1999 when it finally closed, it was the first electric lighthouse in the world. Designed by James Douglas and opened in 1871. It is situated on Lizard point at Marsden between South Shields and Sunderland. The foghorns (which are supposed to be the loudest in Britain) were switched on when visibility was below 2miles. The foghorn is still in working order and sounded throughout the year on special occasions.
