British student wins over £60k in major international gaming tournament A video games development student from Hampshire has just returned from Long Beach, California, where he won $80, 000 (£61, 000) in the H1Z1 Invitational Legends tournament organised by TwitchCon. Nineteen year old Jack Parker, who lives in The New Forest, fought off competition from 74 other players to scoop first place, giving him the biggest pay-out from a single tournament in H1Z1 esports history. The tournament, which was broadcast on a live feed, was a part of TwitchCon’s biggest H1Z1 gaming event with an overall prize pool of $500k (£380k) spread across three tournamentsJack said: “I was speechless. I hoped to place in the top ten, but didn’t really expect too much as it’s only my second tournament. The money’s great and I’m going to invest it so it’s there when I need it, but I’m happier that I’m getting known which is giving me the chance to get sponsored to enter more competitions.” Jack has been playing H1Z1 for a couple of years, but only started playing seriously at the start of this year when he started creeping up the leader board. He was placed seventh in Europe when he was the only British player to be invited on an all-expenses trip to Los Angeles in March. His team played well, leading to him being one of 75 selected to take part in the latest H1Z1 Legend tournament. Jack, who studied a Level 2 creative media course at Totton College before moving on to the Level 3 BTEC in video games development, said: “I love the game – it’s a bit like Hunger Games, every game is different.” The vocational and technical college has thriving creative media faculty with industry standard equipment, and Jack added: “Doing the games development courses have definitely helped me. Knowing how the games are created and built has given me an advantage when playing. I’m able to see things in a different way.Having gained his Level 3 games development qualification at Totton College.
