In 1559 Cosimo I de' Medici announced a contest to create the first public fountain in Florence celebrating the recent success of the Florentines over the sea. The renowned sculptor Bartolomeo Ammannati won the contest and sculpted the figure of Neptune in fine Carrara marble; but the Florentines have never liked the statue - even today they call it "Il Biancone" (= the huge white one). When the sculpted group was inaugurated, in 1565, the Florentines commented the work with more than a hint of irony: "Ammannato, Ammannato, quanto marmo t'hai sciupato!" ( = Ammannato, Ammannato, how much good marble have you squandered!). The bronze sculptures all around the central figure of Neptune sport a fancy electric blue lighting which would be well suited to a rock concert :-)
